Ganado Advocates Senior Associate Matthew Attard has been elected Malta Maritime Law Association (MMLA) President following its Annual General Meeting, he announced on Friday.

He shared that he is “thrilled” by the news and thanked previous President Ann Fenech for her “stellar work during the period of her presidency”.

“I am looking forward to working with the new Executive Committee and all its members. Exciting times ahead,” Dr Attard said.

Dr Attard previously served as Vice President at the association and has formed part of the MMLA for around 10 years.

He will be joined by Ganado Advocates colleague Jan Rossi, who has been appointed Executive Committee member. The law firm wished them both “all the best” in their new roles.

The MMLA’s new Executive Committee for the 2022-2025 mandate period is made up of Dr Attard as President, Suzanne Shaw and Nicholas Valenzia as Vice Presidents, Lisa Camilleri as Secretary, Adrian Attard as Treasurer, and Anndrea Moran, Andrew Massa, Chris Cini, Ivan Vella, Dr Rossi, Robert Radmilli and Stephan Piazza as members.

Dr Attard has been a Senior Associate at Ganado Advocates for over 15 years, primarily focusing on shipping registration and the sale and acquisition of vessels, as well as the formation and support of shipping organisations and companies. He also regularly assists major financial institutions and owners in the financing of vessels and related matters.

He holds a Master of Laws in International Maritime Law from the International Maritime Law Institute and is a Doctor of Law from University of Malta.

The MMLA is a non-profit organisation that was set up in 1994 to promote the study and advancement of maritime law and its administration. It plays a key role in ensuring that the Maltese maritime legislative and regulatory infrastructure is “constantly updated, revised, amended, and improved in a proactive and well-researched manner”.
