A disused match factory dating back to 1950, situated in Marsa, is set to be demolished to make way for a development featuring five levels of offices, a two-storey retail outlet and a restaurant.

The site occupies a commanding position just before the Marsa roundabout, on the corner of Triq Aldo Moro, Triq Diċembru 13, and Triq it-Tiġrija.

The site is owned by CPHCL, better known as Corinthia Group, which has been trying to obtain planning approval for the development since 2018.

At the time, a bone of contention for the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage was the façade of the building, which was to be demolished.

In the new plans, the façade of what the SCH described as a “mid-twentieth century industrial building with a degree of architectural and historical value,” is to be dismantled and re-integrated into the new building.
