The Malta Institute of Accountants (MIA) brings together over 4,000 accountants and auditors based on the Maltese Islands, empowering them a stronger collective voice. It provides professional guidance, technical support and ongoing professional education and training sessions to members and aspiring members of the profession.

The Institute actively promotes a better legislative and regulatory ambience in the industry and makes sure to reflect the members’ views by participating in extensive consultations processes which are regularly carried out by local and European authorities and leading international accounting organisations of which it is a member.

It regularly presents its proposals in relation to key legislative developments and seeks to make its voice heard on developments which impact not solely the accountancy profession but also the wider financial services industry and the competitiveness of the Maltese economy. The Institute has been one of the strongest proponents of the importance of elevating ESG to a matter of national importance, dedicating ample resources to this issue over the past couple of years.

Aware of the challenges associated with attracting and retaining qualified professionals, the Institute strives to attract talented individuals to the profession and invests heavily in the process of creating awareness of the vast opportunities that a career in accountancy offers. In parallel, it seeks to facilitate the process of recruiting third country nationals to fill the gaps required by the increasing demands on the profession.

The Institute also seeks to boost visibility of the role and the value of the accountancy profession to the Maltese public, the business community, authorities and other relevant stakeholders. In doing so, it promotes the importance of sustaining the profession’s reputation and implementation of the highest standards and ethics.
