Specto Ltd has been involved in waste management since its inception in 2002.

"We were the first registered and authorised brokers for the export of hazardous waste streams in Malta," says a company spokesperson.

Immediately following the entry of Malta into the EU, Specto carried out Malta's first industrial hazardous waste clean up at a local pharmaceutical company, exporting over 60 tons of pharma waste to authorised disposal sites in the EU.

"In the past 20 years we have managed and exported over 5,000 tons of hazardous waste, ranging from pharmaceutical to solvent waste, and from electronic waste to expired medicines.

"Our ethos has always been to operate within strict ethical, regulatory and best available options criteria, and we are proud to have been standard bearers in this aspect."

Waste management in Malta is taking new options and ventures, and Specto is keeping abreast with the situation. "Over the past years we have been re-engineering our operations and we look forward to launching new initiatives in the field."

Besides Waste Management, Specto Ltd offers consultancy services in chemical handling, where it assists end-users in BAT for the procurement, handling and disposal of chemicals. It is also launching initiatives in that regard.

The company also supports clients in other areas, including Occupational Health and Safety as well as environmental issues.

Twenty years down the line, Specto says it will be reinventing itself, and "we look forward to being of support to local stakeholders to create a safer work environment."
