Michael Attard Ltd has brought Chinese car maker DongFeng to Malta, unveiling a lineup of three vehicles from the brand.

Michael Attard Ltd, a vehicle importer and distributor in Malta, adds Dongfeng to its portfolio of top notch brands, including Peugeot, Citroën and Opel.

The addition of Dongfeng vehicles to Malta means another Chinese EV brand has been brought to Malta’s shores. While a few years ago Chinese vehicles represented a relatively small niche within the local market, this number has now grown.

A large number of Chinese car EV brands have made it to the market or are on their way, and competition keeps rising. BYD Malta is represented through GasanZammit Motors, MG Malta through Muscats Motors, Leapmotor through Motors Inc, Changan through Fapi Motors Malta Ltd, Xpeng through the Debono Group.

Rather than launching their own dealerships in Malta, it is well-established local dealerships which are bringing these brands to the Maltese public.

National Statistics Office data had shown that, while the total number of purely petrol-using passenger cars vastly outnumbers all other engine types combined on Maltese roads, the rate at which electric passenger cars are being added is higher. In the second quarter of 2026, there were 11,305 licensed electric passenger cars in Malta, which is 3,150 more than were in the second quarter of 2025. Meanwhile, the number of purely petrol-using passenger cars in 2026 stood at 216,321, which is 1,858 more than the same quarter last year.

Dongfeng is headquartered in Wuhan, Hubei Province. Its predecessor, the Second Automobile Manufacturing Plant, was established in 1969. Its main line of business covers commercial vehicles, passenger vehicles, NEVs, auto assemblies, parts and components, machines and equipment, and other automobile-related products and services.

The Chinese brand has been expanding its international footprint. In January 2026, it debuted three of its brands at the Brussels Motor Show, and in 2024 and 2025, introduced the BOX model in Italy.

In a post on its social media page, Michael Attard Ltd announced the introduction of the 007, Box and Vigo Dongfeng models, all three of which are electric vehicles.
