A series of permanent bronze large-scale sculptures by local contemporary artist and illustrator Zack Ritchie will grace the open public spaces within St Julian’s Mercury Towers.

The “monuments” are inspired by Maltese heritage and popular cultural iconography, with the aim educating, entertaining, and instilling a sense of pride.

This initiative draws parallels with Mercury Towers’ vision of “taking heritage into the future”, achieved through the painstaking restoration of the Grade 2 Listed Mercury House, which is juxtaposed against the monumental Mercury Tower by Zaha Hadid Architects.

As per a company press release, Mercury Towers “aspires to create a new cultural hub to be enjoyed by the local community, and this is one project of several which will contribute to realising that vision.”

Mercury Towers states that the sculptures can be enjoyed by everyone – “visitors to children and adults alike”.

Once the characters find their permanent place within Mercury Towers, a captivating story about each character will unfold. In-depth details will also be revealed about the technique employed in their creation, the artist’s creative process and everything in between.

“Stay tuned as Zack Ritchie continues to weave his artistic magic, bringing the Mercury Towers district to life through his monumental sculptures and engaging characters. The project will not help only transform the landscape but also invite everyone to connect with and appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Malta.”

Mr Ritchie’s artistic style is deeply influenced by his child-like approach, with a strong affinity for cartoons that left an indelible mark on his formative years. The whimsical nature and boundless imagination of cartoons not only brought a smile to his face but also ignited a sense of possibility and positivity within him.

Inspired by this, Zack aims to infuse his own work with the same joy and inspiration that cartoons imparted to him, creating art that resonates with audiences on a profound level.

Mercury Towers aspires to “create a new cultural hub that epitomises vibrant downtown living.”

Comprising Malta's tallest residential tower, the luxury ME Hotel by Meliá and a new quarter of retail, public spaces, restaurants, bars, cafes and entertainment, Mercury Towers is a the final project designed by Zaha Hadid, recognised as one of the world’s most exceptional architects.
