On Wednesday evening, Antonio Abdilla Zerafa announced that he will no longer serve as Money Laundering Reporting Officer (MLRO) and Head of Financial Compliance at the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA).

“With a heavy heart but with profound gratitude, I say goodbye after more than nine incredible years with the authority,” he commented.

He noted that his journey at MGA was a remarkable saga, woven with personal milestones, professional triumphs, countless challenges, and invaluable lessons.

Reflecting on his time at MGA, he described it as a transformative journey of growth and experiences that have shaped who he is today.

“The MGA has been a cornerstone in my life, providing the autonomy and support needed to thrive both personally and professionally. It has been a profound privilege and honour to contribute to the MGA’s mission for nearly a decade,” he continued.

In his post, he extended his gratitude to numerous individuals who contributed to “the success of nearly a decade-long journey.”

Furthermore, he also thanked stakeholders and his teams. “Leading you has been an honour, and I hope I’ve imparted at least half of the invaluable lessons you’ve taught me along the way,” Mr Abdilla Zerafa remarked.

He stated that he plans to concentrate on a smooth handover in the coming weeks, while also bidding farewell and reminiscing with colleagues about adventures and lessons learnt.

Additionally, he noted that in August he will be taking time off to welcome his newborn son  “and focus on being the best father I can be.”

“AML and sports betting integrity will always be close to my heart, so after this break, I plan to continue championing these causes,” he concluded.

Mr Abdilla Zerafa has multiple qualifications in the industry: A Diploma of Information and Communications Technology from the University of Cambridge, a Diploma in General Studies, Law and Theology, a Certificate of Achievement in Criminology, and a Certificate in Anti-Money Laundering and Funding of Terrorism (AMLFT).

Furthermore, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Criminology from the University of Malta, and a Master of Science in Counter Fraud and Counter Corruption studies from the University of Portsmouth.

In addition, he is currently reading for a PhD in Law and Criminology at Sheffield Hallam University.
