Monday marked the last day of Mark Harwood as Director of the Institute for European Studies at University of Malta (UM).
He closed this chapter after “an amazing eight years” during which the team and he have sought to improve and innovate as an institution.
Prof. Harwood commented that the institute remains the largest one on campus with over 1,000 students having graduated with a degree in European Studies. None of this, he added, would have been possible “without the hard work and dedication of all the staff,” past and present, administrative and academic.
“It was always my conviction that a key to our success is the need for rotation and I am happy, after two-terms, to hand the directorship to Moira Catania. I am sure she will do an excellent job and I look forward to working with her and my colleagues, in the interest of the Institute and the University,” he said.
As a final note, he thanked all past and present students within the institute. Prof. Harwood commented that the institute attracts gifted, ambitious students, with alumni working in all walks of life in Malta and overseas.
“They make us proud and show us that this topic, this Institute, makes a difference and contributes to Malta in myriad ways. This is a legacy to be proud of,” Prof. Harwood concluded.
