Malta’s Labour Party took home a record-breaking, third consecutive win in the 2022 general election that took place over the weekend

Election fever reached a crescendo after it emerged that the Labour Party won big at the 2022 general election, beating the Nationalist Party by 39,474 votes.

While the win was expected, some notable names did not make the cut, with Labour stalwarts Jose Herrera (former Culture Minister) and Evarist Bartolo (former Foreign Affairs Minister) failing to get re-elected.

Labour’s Rosianne Cutajar, once a Junior member of Cabinet but resigned over her involvement in a scandal, also failed to get re-elected. She may still secure a spot in Parliament through a casual election.

On the Nationalist side, two leading MPs failed to get elected despite their frontline presence throughout the campaign: Jason Azzopardi and Karol Aquilina, but the pair could also secure an MP seat through casual election.

Casual elections will take place in two weeks time, while a gender corrective mechanism could see more names added to Parliament.

Some new PN candidates secured enough votes, such as Joe Giglio, Ivan Castillo, Darren Carabott, Jerome Caruana Cilia, Justin Schembri, and Alex Borg.
