The development of Trident Park began in the second quarter of 2018, and welcomed its first tenants by the first quarter of 2022. The completion of the endeavour culminated in a grand opening ceremony on 28th June 2023. This momentous occasion received widespread acclaim, including from the press.
Trident Park was envisioned as a space aimed at enhancing employee satisfaction and well-being, with the bold decision being made to develop only 43 per cent of the site to prioritise open public spaces, vast landscaped areas and orchard-inspired, landscaped gardens of varying hues. This decision, though initially question, has proven successful, creating a dynamic, light-filled work environment that integrates eco-friendly technologies. The green office campus also contains a gym, childcare services, and a dental and med aesthetic clinic.
The main entrance and landmark colonnade, part of the original Farsons Brewery, were restored, preserving the historic boardroom now named in honour of Lewis V. Farrugia for his post-war vision in Malta. The Trident Park Conference Hall, with a capacity of 170 guests, hosted its first conference in February 2023.
Additionally, innovative technologies were adopted to enhance operations and services. A Thermally Active Building System (TABS), uses slightly chilled water within the structural floor slabs to cool the building overnight and significantly reduce day-to-day energy use. As a result, the building achieves a 55 per cent reduction in its carbon footprint compared to the prevailing standard on the island. It acts as an adaptable workspace that integrates thermal mass, cross-ventilation, and ample levels of glare-free daylighting, with little to no air-conditioning.
Trident Park’s team stated that the community that has been built, together with the high-calibre tenants that have been attracted, are source of “immense pride,” as the people are the ones who “bring this space to life.” The vibrant community will be practically in full force by this summer. The shared vision and synergy within the community continue to inspire the pursuit of excellence and innovation.
As previously mentioned, in the sphere of architectural innovation and forward-thinking urban development, Trident Park has emerged as a standout, sweeping through the awards season with a series of accolades that underscore its excellence.
This project has not only won numerous prestigious awards but also achieved international recognition, including a notable commendation from the Civic Trust Awards. Known for highlighting architectural excellence, the Civic Trust awarded Trident Park with the "Highly Commended" title, a nod to its transformative effect on a significant cultural heritage site, rejuvenating it for contemporary use. This honour reflects the project's substantial role in enriching the architectural landscape.
At the Din l-Art Ħelwa Architectural Heritage Awards, Trident Park, alongside the Brewhouse, secured the prestigious Judge Maurice Caruana Curran Award, named for the organisation's Founder and celebrating the project's outstanding quality, historical importance, and beneficial impact on the local community. The project also took home the Prix d’Honneur in the Regeneration of an Area category, affirming its status as a landmark of architectural renewal.
Other awards included the Architecture MasterPrize, a respected authority that recognized Trident Park with an "Honorable Mention" in the Mixed Use category, the Green Apple Environment Award that recognised the project as a Silver Winner, and the WAFX Awards' Re-Use category.
The cascade of awards and editorial recognition serves as a testament to Trident Park's influential impact on the built environment and the communities it touches. It stands as a paragon of how architecture can beautifully merge with heritage, sustainability, and community values to create harmonious and impactful spaces.
The office market is facing challenges, with an increasing supply of office space outstripping demand. This trend is largely due to a surge in new office developments entering the market just as remote work began gaining traction. Despite these market conditions, Trident Park has managed to secure lease agreements that occupy 83 per cent of the available spaces. The success can be attributed to the unique features, including expansive open spaces, ample parking, and a range of amenities.
