SPAR Malta on Wednesday announced that it has opened a new outlet in the heart of Valletta, at The Savoy Arcade.

Located on the busy Republic Street, on the corner with St John Street, the Savoy Arcade previous housed multiple clothing shops and in the early years a popular cinema

SPAR has outlets spread across various locations in Malta, including at The Point Shopping Mall, Daniel's Shopping Mall, Gżira and St Paul’s Bay, among others.

Despite being labelled as SPAR Express, the outlet features different sections catering to different needs, from vegetables to confectionery and baked goods.

While some individuals were happy with the new addition, others commented that the introduction of the chain in Valletta is a further blow to the last remaining small businesses in Valletta, known as ‘tal-merċa.’

Others were concerned over the aesthetic of the building and how the banner contrasts Valletta’s style.

In the Facebook group ‘Residenti Beltin’ one commentor highlighted that in Salzburg, Austria, SPAR had adapted its facade to complement the city’s architecture and style.

Some commentors pointed out possible chaos over deliveries in Valletta’s most prominent street.

Despite some negative comments, an individual who has been living in Valletta since the 80s noted that a more positive outlook is needed as in the past Valletta was “dead.”

“I understand that changes can bring some element of incovenience but let’s be more positive and hold discussions when needed,” he added.
