In today's world, environmental consciousness has emerged as a pivotal factor shaping the success and sustainability of businesses across industries. With heightened awareness of climate change, resource depletion, and ecological degradation, there is a growing imperative for businesses to focus on environmental responsibility.

Embracing sustainability not only aligns with ethical principles but also presents a number of opportunities for innovation, cost savings, and competitive advantage. As consumers increasingly prioritise eco-friendly products and services, businesses that demonstrate a commitment to environmental concerns stand to enhance brand reputation, foster customer loyalty, and future-proof their operations.

One such company is Borg Cardona & Co Ltd, which was founded in 1948 by Maurice Borg Cardona; with over 70 years of knowledge and expertise representing over 40 brands directly related to pet and farm animal nutrition, medicines, utilities, hygiene, safety, comfort and other supplies. Based in Ta' Qali, Borg Cardona has been on a remarkable journey for over a decade towards giving environmental friendliness and sustainability their due; shaping a better world not only for humans but also for animals.

Sitting down with Managing Directors Nigel and Andrew Borg Cardona, we uncover the inspiring story behind the company's determined commitment to sustainability and the transformative impact it has had on both business operations and the wider community.

Twelve years ago, when Borg Cardona & Co Ltd relocated to Ta' Qali, the directors made a bold decision to prioritise sustainability. The company's warehouse in Ta' Qali was constructed with a strong focus on environmental sustainability, making it a standalone energy-efficient facility.

Reflecting on this moment, Andrew Borg Cardona recalls, "It was a difficult time to invest in these things since sustainability concerns weren’t as prominent as they are in today’s world. We initially put the company through extra costs such as double glazing, insulation, intelligent lighting in the warehouse, investing in efficient vehicles, and installing around 250 solar panels. However, we always considered these improvements as investments as, apart from helping the planet, you are also saving in the long run.’’

This forward-thinking approach led to another key sustainability feature of the company. Borg Cardona & Co Ltd are self-sufficient when it comes to its water usage; the company does not have a water meter but it uses its own water supply from the rainwater captured throughout the year. Apart from that, they recycle all of their plastic and cartons and they also encourage their clients to give back their empty boxes when their orders are delivered.

Nigel Borg Cardona emphasises, "For animals to be healthy, our environmental conditions need to be looked after," highlighting the company's commitment to both environmental preservation and animal welfare.

At the heart of Borg Cardona & Co Ltd's sustainability ethos lies a profound connection to nature. Nigel explains, "Our ethos of keeping animal health as a priority translated into creating a better environment for employees and pets of our clients." This holistic approach to sustainability is not just about reducing carbon emissions or conserving resources; it's about fostering a deeper sense of harmony with the natural world.

The company's dedication to this cause has not gone unnoticed, with accolades such as winning the 3rd prize for 'Sustainable Enterprise' by the Ministry for the Economy, Investment, and Small Businesses in 2017. Borg Cardona & Co Ltd was recognised for its exceptional efforts in social responsibility, particularly through extensive support to animal sanctuaries, feeders, and registered NGOs throughout the year. The company was also awarded the 'Planet Category Winner' award by ROYAL CANIN SAS, one of the company’s main suppliers, serving as proof of its commitment to sustainability.

‘‘When we won the award, it came as a surprise as what we did wasn’t to gain attention but rather because it formed part of our vision for the company’’, says Andrew. ‘‘Being recognised has encouraged us further over the years and we are constantly looking to improve. We have recently changed all of our light fittings to LEDs which is, again, costly but an investment.’’

Another initiative that Borg Cardona & Co Ltd took to promote sustainability is their Royal Canin gift scheme.

‘‘We started this gift scheme about 10 years ago with the idea to bring back as many pet food bags as possible to send them for recycling, rewarding our clients through a points system. Our aim was to go a step further and turn these bags into compostable material but there were some challenges.’’

Always set on improving, the company plans to introduce degradable bags by 2025 while Royal Canin, as a supplier, have promised to go down to a near-zero carbon footprint making Borg Cardona more efficient in the way that they purchase raw materials and goods.

Looking ahead, Borg Cardona & Co Ltd remains committed to its sustainability journey, with ambitious plans for the future. Andrew reveals, "Royal Canin makes it a habit to go around their subsidiaries and importers, unannounced, to view the warehouses and their conditions. We are proud to say that we are listed as one of the most sustainable companies that they export their supplies to and they will be using Borg Cardona & Co Ltd to inspire other companies, all over the world, to work in the same environmentally friendly manner that we do.’’

The company also aims to achieve significant milestones, such as reclaiming 25% of the packaging it places on the market, thereby setting a benchmark for sustainable business practices within the industry.

Beyond its business operations, Borg Cardona & Co Ltd is deeply committed to giving back to the community and supporting animal welfare causes.

"A percentage of our profit is allocated to animal sanctuaries and feeders, ensuring that our contributions extend beyond business operations to make a tangible difference in the community", highlights Andrew.

Through initiatives such as loyalty schemes and partnerships with local organisations, the company strives to create a culture of philanthropy and community engagement, inspiring positive change and creating a lasting impact.

Borg Cardona & Co Ltd stands as a shining example of sustainability, setting new standards for both local and international businesses. Through visionary leadership, innovative initiatives, and a passionate commitment to environmental preservation, the company is paving the way for a greener future.
