Malta is making strides in the field of quantum computing with the launch of an innovative research programme titled Advancing Quantum Computing in Malta: Quantum Algorithms and Machine Learning.
Announced at a press conference in January 2025, the programme aims to position Malta as a leader in emerging technologies.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation and the University of Malta (UM). Led by UM academics André Xuereb and John Apollaro, the programme seeks to bridge the gap between quantum computation theory and practical applications in various fields, including healthcare, climate change, and artificial intelligence.
Parliamentary Secretary for Youth, Research & Innovation, Keith Azzopardi Tanti, highlighted Malta’s commitment to innovation during the press conference. He stated, "this initiative underscores Malta's commitment to fostering innovation. It showcases the talent of our researchers and our aspiration to position Malta as a centre for advanced technologies. Furthermore, it represents a chance to unlock new opportunities."
A key aspect of the programme is the establishment of collaborations with major tech corporations such as Amazon, IBM, and Airbus.
These partnerships aim to provide researchers and students with access to cutting-edge quantum computing infrastructure. Additionally, the initiative will fund postdoctoral research and facilitate the exchange of knowledge, further strengthening Malta’s research capabilities.
Prof. Xuereb described the programme as "an exciting opportunity for Malta to contribute meaningfully to the global scientific community." The initiative is also exploring the creation of a permanent Quantum Computing Exhibition at Esplora, Malta’s interactive science centre.
Furthermore, in 2026, Malta will host an international summer school to attract researchers from around the world.
