The Malta Bankers’ Association issued a statement to salute “fellow banker” Mario Mallia, describing him as a “much respected colleague and former Chairperson of the Association”.

The association expressed “its disbelief and shock at the sad news of the demise” of Mr Mallia.

He passed away on Wednesday evening at the age of 59. Mr Mallia served as the Chief Executive Officer at BOV from 2016 to 2019, having been employed by the bank since 1979.

“Mario was a key person in the development of the Association over several years, both through his contribution as member and later on as Chairperson for two terms.

“The Association is proud to have worked closely with Mario and our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Rosette, his wife and his children, Daniela and Bernard. Farewell dear friend and colleague, we will always treasure your memory,” the MBA wrote.
