Lydia Abela has been appointed President of Special Olympics Malta, an agency launched in 2000 which has obtained full accreditation from the international body of Special Olympics in 2006.

In a statement posted to social media, the executive board announced that Lydia Abela, a seasoned lawyer and the wife to Prime Minister Robert Abela, has been appointed to the role.

Anna Calleja, National Director of Special Olympics Malta, described the appointment as an “honour” to have Dr Abela “join the family”.

“I look forward to jointly giving our all to ensure that each athlete develops their full potential”.

Ms Calleja said this was an exciting time in view of Malta hosting the Special Olympics in 2022.

During a meeting with athletes and parents, Dr Abela said she felt honoured to work with the Special Olympics Malta team, and will work towards investing in Malta’s athletes who have great potential and always make Malta proud.

Under the previous Government, led by former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat, his wife, Michelle Muscat, had also been appointed President.
