Lombard Bank Malta is seeking to transform two historic landmark townhouses on Saqqajja Hill, Rabat, into a bank branch, including the installation of a platform, passenger lift and general restoration works.
The buildings were a source of controversy last year after the cultural watchdog approved a proposal by a previous owner to turn the Rabat townhouses into a luxury 30-room boutique hotel
Without expressly specifying, the previous developer, Keith Grima, confirmed that the application had been withdrawn and the townhouses placed for sale.

It appears that Lombard Bank Malta has purchased the properties, after a PA application notification shows that it applied (PA/03524/20) for:
“Change of use from Class 1 residential building to Class 4A Bank Branch including installation of platform and passenger lift and general restoration works.”
Should the application be accepted, this would spell the end of speculation about the site being developed into a hotel, at a time when the tourism sector is facing serious challenges.
