Judge Vincent A. De Gaetano has been appointed to the Board of Directors of ROLE, a non-profit rule of law empowerment association, Malta’s Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman announced on Friday (today).

The association, incorporated and registered under French law, is primarily tasked with the promotion and defence of human rights and the rule of law in Europe and Central Asia.

Dr De Gaetano presently serves as Commissioner for Education within the Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman.

He now joins four other members on the Board of ROLE, namely former ECHR Judge Ksenija Turković, who will serve as Chairperson, as well as former Attorney General and former President of the Supreme Court of Israel Aharon Barak, and two human rights activists of international repute Anya Verkhosvskaya and Yervant Shirinyan.

The appointment of all five members is for a period of three years, effective from 25th June 2024.

Dr De Gaetano’s election to the position was made possible after clearance was obtained according to law from the Speaker of the House of Representatives last November.

He previously served as Judge elected in respect of Malta on the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) from 2010 to 2019.

Prior to that, he served as Chief Justice of Malta from 2002 to 2010, before he was succeeded by Silvio Camilleri.
