Maltese forensic expert and serologist Robert Cardona has passed away suddenly, prompting an outpouring of tributes from relatives and friends.
Mr Cardona was known professionally for his work in forensics and serology, also appearing in court to provide his expertise on some cases. He was also the cousin of former Maltese MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando.
Outside his professional life, Mr Cardona was a keen food connoisseur and regularly shared his appreciation for food and dining on social media.
His passing was announced by relatives, who described his death as “sudden and unexpected”.
“As my godfather, you were and always will be very close to my heart. You were someone I constantly looked up to, and I will always be grateful for the memories, guidance, and love you gave us,” one relative wrote.
“Although our hearts are heavy, we find some peace in knowing that you lived a great life, surrounded by people who loved and cared for you.”
Friends also expressed shock at the news, with one revealing that the pair had been due to travel together in the coming days.
“We were supposed to be travelling together next week, making plans and looking forward to the trip. I never imagined that instead I’d be writing this,” the friend wrote.
In a poignant social media post shared just last month, Mr Cardona reflected on mortality and the importance of remaining grounded.
“Death is inevitable... so try to live humble, don’t be greedy, don’t be pompous and most of all feet on the ground... the world revolves on its own axis, not yours,” he wrote.
The words have taken on added significance following news of his passing.
