Fleur Abela has been appointed Malta’s new Commissioner for Animal Welfare, succeeding Alison Bezzina, whose contract expires in the coming days.

In announcing the appointment, the Government thanked Ms Bezzina for her service and dedication to the protection and welfare of animals, while congratulating Dr Abela on her new role.

The Commissioner’s office is tasked with promoting and safeguarding animal welfare and rights across Malta and Gozo.

A lawyer by profession, Dr Abela graduated in law from the University of Malta in 2018 before continuing her studies at Queen Mary University of London.

She specialises in civil law, human rights, and family law, and has been involved in legal projects related to children and animal rights.

“Her passion for the rights of the vulnerable, and her love of animals, was constant throughout her professional and personal life,” read the statement by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights.

In a social media post, Dr Abela expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Commissioner, thanking her predecessor for raising awareness on key issues.

“Animal welfare is about responsibility, respect and action,” she wrote. “Together with NGOs, authorities, and the public, we can strengthen protection and build a culture where animals are treated with dignity and care. I pledge to listen, act, and ensure progress that truly counts.”

Dr Abela is the daughter of retired judge Toni Abela, who also had a political career that included co-founding the Green Party in Malta and serving as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party.
