The passing of Anthony Spiteri Debono, husband to Maltese President Myriam Spiteri Debono, has triggered an outpouring of sentimental tributes from Malta’s political class and legal professionals.

A notary by profession, Dr Spiteri Debono passed away on Thursday (today) morning.

He was described as a gentleman with a humble character by Prime Minister Robert Abela, who noted that although he never sought the limelight, he provided tremendous support to his wife’s political career.

Before her appointment as President of Malta in 2024, Myriam Spiteri Debono served as the country’s first female Speaker of the House of Representatives between 1996 and 1998.

Leader of the Opposition Bernard Grech described Anthony Spiteri Debono as an “authentic, humble and gentle” man, while former Minister Jason Azzopardi recounted how “Tony” has been like a father figure to him and other law students during their time at University, being considerably older at the time he undertook his studies.

Dr Azzopardi also highlighted his “disarming smile” and velvety voice”, while saying that his dedication to his family as a husband and father was exemplary.

While passing on her condolences to the family, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola noted Dr Spiteri Debono's ability to communicate, with his words, silence, or even just a look.

"In every conversation we had, I could see a man who was doing his part in the Presidency of Her Excellency Myrian Spiteri Debono," wrote Dr Metsola.

The sentiment was also expressed in a touching personal tribute by Transport Minister Chris Bonett, who pointed out that Anthony Spiteri Debono's full acceptance of his role in support of his wife was always respectful and dignified, despite being of a generation for whom such a role did not come easy.

Dr Bonett, who worked alongside the Spiteri Debonos in his notarial practice, also touched on Dr Spiteri Debono's love for learning: "Saying he was interesting is not enough," said the Transport Minister, recalling how he could hold a conversation on "literally everything".

The WhosWho.mt newsroom expresses its deep condolences to President Myriam Debono and her family.
