The Government has launched a public call for the construction of a new intermediate care hospital at St Vincent de Paul.

At an estimated cost of €1.3 billion, the new hospital will include 300 beds and act as a bridge between acute hospital treatment and patient discharge.

It will be called Sir Temi Zammit Hospital, after the famous Maltese doctor and historian.

Prime Minister Robert Abela said the projects builds on a pilot project that was launched at StVincent de Paul in 2024, which began with 16 beds and eventually to 40 beds through the regeneration of two halls within the Rużar Briffa Complex.

After deeming this project to be a success, the government decided to invest €1.3 billion in a new hospital.

The Prime Minister described the private sector as a strategic partner when to comes to raising the level of elderly healthcare.

As it stands, the government has 20 deals with the private sector for the procurement of beds, while three state-owned homes are privately operated.
