The world’s first TV station dedicated to all things Mediterranean has officially gone live after obtaining approval from the Broadcasting Authority and signing a national distribution agreement with GO.
Med.TV, a television channel headquartered in Malta will focused exclusively on Mediterranean culture, lifestyle, and business.
It also marks a first for Malta, becoming the country’s first broadcaster to obtain a satellite licence, enabling the channel to beam its content to more than 160 million households across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
Med.TV has already been transmitting on SKY Italia for the past two weeks and will shortly expand to other cable operators in Cyprus and Tunisia. It also aims to launch on FAST Channels such as Rakuten within the coming week.
It was founded by Anton Tabone, a former senior diplomat to the United Nations who was also appointed as non-resident Ambassador to the UN for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.
Celebrating the launch, Mr Tabone said this new channel marks a milestone for Malta:
“The Mediterranean has always been a crossroads of civilisations, where cultures, languages, and traditions have intertwined.”
With Malta at the helm, Med.TV aims to bring together the region’s diverse voices under one platform, platforming everything from art and cuisine to business, sustainability, and innovation.
Viewers can expect a blend of cultural documentaries, travel and food shows, and original series from across the region.
Med.TV will also secure exclusive access to live events and performances that Maltese viewers can expect in the coming months.
Other programmes currently being recorded include travelogues, kitchen programmes, and Med CEOs, a business-focused series featuring leading Mediterranean entrepreneurs.
Content is available in English, Italian, French, Arabic, Spanish, Greek, and other languages, with all programming broadcast in its original language and subtitled in English.
Among its flagship programmes is MedBiz, a weekly series focusing on regional business and entrepreneurship, and Med What’s On, which spotlights major cultural events happening around the Mediterranean, from art fairs and film festivals to traditional village celebrations.
Med.TV also broadcasts Inter-Rives, a long-running Euro-Arab television co-production project promoted by COPEAM (Permanent Conference of the Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators) and ASBU (Arab States Broadcasting Union).
The initiative brings together public broadcasters from across the Mediterranean to collaboratively produce documentaries on shared social and cultural issues, with participating TV stations able to broadcast the entire series across their networks.
Drama, too, has a place on the channel.
Vivi e Lascia Vivere, an Italian series about resilience and reinvention set in Naples, is one of several acclaimed productions featured as part of Med.TV’s launch lineup.
Beyond entertainment, Med.TV aspires to serve as a hub for cultural exchange and dialogue.
Mr Tabone said the channel plans to commission original content that explores social, environmental, and historical themes, from the impact of climate change on the region’s coastlines to the preservation of Mediterranean heritage.
“We want to highlight the Mediterranean’s shared challenges and opportunities,” Mr Tabone said.
“There’s an incredible strength in this region’s ability to adapt and reinvent itself. Through storytelling, we aim to build understanding, empathy, and pride among the people who call the Mediterranean home.”
Malta’s strategic location at the centre of the Mediterranean makes it an ideal base for this project.
“Launching Med.TV from Malta is symbolic. It reflects who we are and where we’re heading. I believe our island embodies the Mediterranean spirit and we hope it will serve as a bridge between Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.”
Aside from satellite and GO, Med.TV viewers can also access the channel via its official streaming app and website, with on-demand content and live streams accessible globally.
Mr Tabone said the network’s digital presence will continue to expand across platforms, including its current transmission on SKY Italia and future expansion to Tivùsat.
From the sun-soaked coastlines of Spain and the markets of Morocco to the islands of Greece and Malta’s historic harbours, Med.TV is bringing the Mediterranean to screens around the world for the first time, as one connected story.
“Our goal is to inspire a sense of belonging and pride,” says Mr Tabone.
“The Mediterranean has always been a source of creativity, collaboration, and connection. Now it finally has a channel to call its own.”
