“Today is a sad day,” wrote the co-founders of South Indian Restaurant TukTuk, in a post announcing the permanent closure of their Valletta outlet.
The restaurant and food delivery service has taken a hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite the team’s best efforts, the eatery in Malta’s capital was no longer feasible.
“In the last few months at TukTuk we have been working hard to ensure we keep our operations ongoing, keep you fed and keep our staff employed. However with the recent economic conditions due to Covid-19, we have had to make the unfortunate decision to shut our Valletta kitchen,” they wrote, admitting that, having been in operation for 12 years, it was “surely not an easy decision, but was forced upon us in order for TukTuk to survive.”
The team at TukTuk will still be serving their signature South Indian cuisine at their branch within Carob Tree food court in St Julian’s, as well as via their online delivery service.
Thanking their followers for the support, the team ended their statement with an appeal: “next time you feel guilty for tucking into some street food nibbles, a korma with some naan, a dosa, a naanwich or a dum style biryani – just remember that you are supporting a local business and the people that run it.”
