Sliema bistro Fernandõ Gastrotheque is officially the sixth restaurant in Malta and Gozo to be awarded the much-coveted Michelin star, joining Under Grain (Valletta), ION – The Harbour (Valletta), Bahia (Balzan), Noni (Valletta) and De Mondion (Mdina).

This means that since the Michelin guide first started including Malta in 2020, no restaurant has been stripped of the prestigious honour.

The guide is updated annually and restaurants can lose their stars if they close during the year of assessment, or if they do not maintain their standards to make it into the next edition. Another prestigious Michelin category is the Bib Gourmand, an award that recognises restaurants that serve good food at moderate prices.

Restaurants may also be given a ‘mention’ on the guide without any specific ranking, which serves as a marker for quality.

The 2023 edition features a total of 35 restaurants in Malta and Gozo, 6 having one star, four being awarded the Bib Gourmand while the rest are mentioned in the guide.

New mentions include Legligin (Valletta), Rosami (Balluta), Grotto Tavern (Rabat), Giuseppi’s (Naxxar) and LOA (St Paul’s Bay).

One restaurant that is no longer mentioned in the guide is Susurrus in St Julian’s.
