Silvan Agius has joined the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) as Head of Secretariat of the Committee on equality and non-discrimination.

Announcing the news on LinkedIn Mr Agius said “I could not be more excited to get started, I am deeply grateful for the trust the institution has placed in me. I am here to work.”

Mr Agius explained that the Council of Europe was founded on the basis that human rights belong to everyone, and that democratic institutions must be held accountable for making that real.

“PACE has built a significant body of work in pursuit of that promise, advancing equality and non-discrimination as fundamental values. These are rights that every person across 46 member states is entitled to benefit from. I am joining to contribute to that work and to help it grow,” Mr Agius said.

Before this new chapter, Mr Agius was co-director for aequitasbridge for almost a year. He also spent over five years at the European Commission, occupying various roles such as cabinet expert in the Cabinet of the Commissioner for Equality and as an official in the LGBTIQ Unit, DG Justice and Consumers.

He also spent three years as Director of Malta's Human Rights Directorate.
