Robert Farrugia has recently gained recognition for his role in establishing DAMA Malta Valletta, a newly recognised forming chapter of DAMA International.

As the President of this voluntary organisation, Mr Farrugia is leading efforts to create a strong local network for data professionals in Malta, providing them with globally recognised certifications, training, and advocacy opportunities.

Mr Farrugia explained to WhosWho.mt that DAMA Malta Valletta operates as a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to support and elevate data professionals through education, knowledge sharing, and policy influence.

The organisation is built on three key objectives:

  1. Fostering a thriving local data community
  2. Empowering the local data community through comprehensive data training opportunities and promotion of high standards in Data Practice
  3. Amplifying the local data community’s voice in local policy and advocacy

The journey to recognition as a founding chapter of DAMA International was the result of nine months of dedication from a team of seven volunteers, all of whom are experienced professionals in the data sector.

Their collective effort has positioned DAMA Malta Valletta as a key player in the local data landscape, offering support to professionals such as Data Engineers, Business Analysts, Business Intelligence Engineers, and AI and Machine Learning specialists.

DAMA International, established in 1980, is a leading global association for data management professionals, providing a framework for best practices in data governance, quality, architecture, and analytics. With the formation of its Malta chapter, DAMA’s expertise and resources are now more accessible to data practitioners in the country.

Looking ahead, DAMA Malta Valletta plans to launch its 2025 educational event schedule, offering structured learning and networking opportunities for professionals in the field.

In addition to his role as President of DAMA Malta Valletta, Mr Farrugia is an experienced board member with a background in data analytics, strategy, risk management, and team building. He currently serves as Chief Data Officer at a prominent iGaming company, where he focuses on AI and data-driven strategies to enhance business performance.

He holds an MBA from Warwick Business School and an MSc in Information Security from Royal Holloway, University of London.
