Several of Malta’s wine producing businesses were on Thursday mourning the passing of prominent local enologist Roger Aquilina.

Amongst them, in a touching tribute on social media, Ta’ Mena Estate said it was “deeply saddened” by the loss of its “enologist and friend”.

Dr Aquilina had “dedicated his life” to winemaking on the Maltese Islands and the company said it will be “forever grateful” for all the help he provided over the years.

Similarly, wine importer, distributor and consultancy company Marco Vella Wines Ltd said it was “deeply saddened”, calling him a “pioneer behind the respected local production gained within the years”.

He leaves behind to mourn him his family, including his wife Anna, two children, and four grandchildren, as well as siblings, in-laws, other relatives, and his friends.

The funeral was held on Wednesday and interment took place at Santa Maria Addolorata Cemetery.

"Rest in peace Robert."
