Martin Xuereb, the award-winning architect behind many of Malta’s eye-catching contemporary landmarks, passed away on 1st March at the age of 67.

The news was confirmed by Martin Xuereb & Associates (mxa), his architecture, interior design, and structural engineering firm.

Mr Xuereb was known for his contemporary approach to design, and won several awards for modern interventions to traditional structures like the Piazzetta in Sliema and the Cittadella in Gozo.

The rehabilitation and restoration of Cittadella in Gozo was selected as one of the finalists in the prestigious European RegioStar Awards in 2018.

A rooftop pool at the refurbished Embassy Complex in Valletta was similarly recognised as one of the best 25 pools in the world.

The firm’s design of the Piazzetta in Sliema also recently won the Public Open Space Award at the 2020 Malta Architecture and Spatial Planning Awards.
