Rector Alfred Vella has appointed Karen Mugliett as the new Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Education within the University of Malta.
Announcing the appointment on the faculty’s Facebook page, Education Faculty Dean Colin Calleja extended his well wishes for Dr Mugliett’s new tenure.
The dean expressed his gratitude towards Michelle Attard Tonna, who previously served in the role.
“Her support over the past five years has been invaluable, and I am personally grateful for her contributions to the Faculty’s success,” he added.
Dr Mugliette previously served as the Head of Department of Health, Physical Education and Consumer studies as well as a senior lecturer within the faculty,
In her UM biography, Dr Mugliett is also listed as a co-ordinator of both the BSc and the MTL Home Economics degree programmes, Chairperson of the faculty’s Outreach Committee, and a Member of the EdB Committee.
First and foremost, she is a health educator and communicator and regularly participates in community projects and research activities about family studies, healthy eating, food education, nutrition, sustainable consumption, children and older adults.
Dr Mugliett has participated in various conferences at national and international levels and is also a regular guest speaker on local media on similar subjects.
She served as the Chairperson of the Malta Food Safety Commission between 2017 and 2021, Director on the board of the Malta Council for Science and Technology and Director on the Board of Governors of the Convent of the Sacred Heart Foundation.
On an international level, Dr Mugliett is Vice President of the European Association of Home Economics and member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation for Home Economics.
Presently, she is a member of the Adoptions Board.
She holds diplomas in the culinary arts and food preparation and has postgraduate degrees in education and administration, and management. Additionally, she obtained a doctoral degree in education from the University of Sheffield with a specialisation in innovative pedagogies and technology enhanced learning.
Dr Mugliett is also the author of the book ‘Seasonal and Sustainable: Cooking for healthy living’ as well as other peer reviewed publications and media articles.
